Stainless steel weight formulas
| Shape | Formula (SS 304, mm → kg) |
|---|---|
| Sheet / plate | L (m) × W (m) × T (mm) × 7.93 |
| Round bar | D² × 0.00623 per metre |
| Pipe / round tube | (OD − WT) × WT × 0.02491 per metre |
| Square tube | 4 × WT × (A − WT) × 0.00793 per metre |
| Rectangular tube | 2 × WT × (A + B − 2WT) × 0.00793 per metre |
| Square bar | A² × 0.00793 per metre |
| Hex bar | A² × 0.00687 per metre |
| Flat bar | W × T × 0.00793 per metre |
| Equal / unequal angle | (A + B − T) × T × 0.00793 per metre |

Frequently asked questions
How is stainless steel weight calculated?
Weight = volume × density. For SS 304 the density is 7.93 g/cm³, so a sheet weighs Length (m) × Width (m) × Thickness (mm) × 7.93 kg.
What density should I use for SS 316 and SS 430?
Use about 7.98 g/cm³ for 316/316L and about 7.70–7.75 g/cm³ for 400-series grades like 410 and 430. The calculator applies the right density when you select the grade.
Is the calculated weight exact?
It is a theoretical weight. Actual weight varies slightly with mill thickness tolerance, so invoices are made on actual weighed weight.
